She said, “He is my very first love, I even flew to Kinmen to visit him. I like him because he doesn’t drink, unlike my alcoholic brother. And when we went back to Taiwan, I was moved by his considerate decision. He was willing to rent a house next to my mother’s house, so that I could easily go take care of her. She had a stoke and had been suffered from it for 20 years by then. My mother died in 2011 and after that we moved to Sanying city tribe. “
He said, “We start our day from Sanying. We’d drive to Linkou and load charcoal onto the truck, and then drive to Taipei. The first delivery is made around 11AM, to the restaurants serving lunch. The second is 4PM, to those Japanese yakiniku stores and bars. Between these 2 deliveries is our family lunch time in the truck.
“We firstly met online, the Yahoo messenger. I was a sailor in Kinmen. There is a ‘mini-three link’ trading policy. It is actually 2 boats trading in the middle point of the sea. The government allows us to carry as many goods as we want, as long as we don’t smuggle anything back to Kinmen. Mostly we took electronics parts to sell. China taxed these things heavily, so the Chinese police would arrest us for doing this. Once arrested, our government wouldn’t do anything to help us. Sailors have to find connections and bribe the Chinese officials. It might take a few million dollars to settle each case.
“The risk is high, so I went back and drive the truck. We don’t earn much, just make ends meet. But we have the whole family together, every day, every meal. And that is the biggest happiness in our life.”
